Tim Ballengee, Houston Criminal Defense Attorney

Tim Ballengee is a life-long Houstonian and former felony Chief prosecutor with the Harris County DA’s Office. He spent more than a decade handling and trying the most serious and complex criminal cases in Texas. During his time with the Harris County DA’s Office, Tim gained experience and expertise in handling a wide range of criminal cases from felonies to misdemeanors. Tim served as a Chief prosecutor in the Special Crimes Bureau where he led investigations and handled prosecution of Drug Trafficking Organizations, Prescription Fraud, and Major Narcotics offenses. He also served as a Chief prosecutor in the Felony Trial Bureau, where he handled a docket of over 2,000 felony cases ranging from capital murders to burglary of a habitation and possession of controlled substances. As a Chief of a District Court, Tim managed many prosecutors and established important personal and professional connections. He also helped train in legal areas such as search and seizure, possession, family violence, and self-defense.

Prior to reaching Chief prosecutor, Tim was assigned to the Crimes Against Children division handling all levels of child abuse including sexual assaults, injury to a child, neglect of children. Tim was also previously assigned as a Chief prosecutor in a County Court, in which he managed misdemeanor offenses such as drug offenses, domestic violence, DWI, and assaults. Tim also served as the Chief prosecutor over the misdemeanor Domestic Violence Division, supervising a team of prosecutors and handling difficult cases where complainants recanted. During his time at the Harris County DA’s Office, Tim helped establish the first DWI diversion program in Harris County, allowing first time offenders to avoid a criminal record.

Tim has tried more than 70 jury trials in many different areas from drug possession, DWI, drug trafficking, aggravated assault, sexual assault, aggravated robbery, and murder. He brings a level of real trial experience and skill that was achieved by trying the most difficult and serious cases.

Prior to joining the Harris County DA’s Office, Tim graduated from South Texas College of Law – Houston in 2009, where he was a part of the best Trial Advocacy programs in the country. Prior to law school, Tim graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana with Bachelor of Arts in Political Science.

Tim is licensed to practice federal law in the United States District Court, Southern and Eastern District. He is also a member of the Houston Bar Association and the Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association. Tim is a member of the Alumni Board of Directors for South Texas College of Law – Houston and serves on multiple committees while volunteering to mentor students.
